Thank you! THANK YOU! I am totally giddy with excitement about how well received Truth in the Tinsel has been! I hope you’ve bought the book and joined the Facebook page. It is going to be SO fun to do this whole advent-ure together!
I have literally been GLUED to my computer since the release of Truth in the Tinsel. Reading about all the fun advent calendars and cool ideas you’ve come up with to do with Truth in the Tinsel has made me in full Christmas mode! I’m thinkin’ the rest of the year Impress Your Kids will be devoted to Christmas. Will that be ok? (Seriously, I feel like I might start dressing in red and green from now on!)
Today, Lydia came home with the most fun ornament! I love Lydia’s teachers because they are always sending extra fun things home to do with the kids–we always get papers about fun food crafts and even songs and fingerplays. This would be a fun gift or just a fun activity to do with your kiddos!

All you need is a clear glass ball ornament, about 1 teaspoon of popcorn kernels and a paper bag. Take the top off the ornament and fill the ornament with about 1 teaspoon of popcorn. Put the ornament inside the paper bag and fold down. Put bag in microwave for 1-3 minutes (ours took about 2.5 minutes).
Take it out of the microwave and…

Is that not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?! The kids thought it was magic. Wonder if you could do it with colored popcorn? That would be fun!
Do you have a fun handmade ornament to share? Leave a link in the comments!

I love making kettle popcorn in my microwave! I made applesauce cinnamon ornaments to put on our tree this year:

This is so cute! You could even tie a little red or green ribbon on it, or let the kids paint a little design on the ball! Love it, thanks!

Take some food color (paste/gel type works best) and put a very little bit in a zippie with some kernels. Let the kiddos squish them around to get them covered. Pour them out on parchment to dry. Once they are dry, pop as normal and you’ll have colored popcorn (and didn’t have to add sugar or butter like most colored recipes!).

Oh yeah, painting the ball would be cute! I was trying to think of some funny puns with POP so you could add a fun tag to it, but all I could come up with was POPular, POPPING IN and Mary POPPins–not too christmasy!

I have been trying to find a way to color the popcorn- any suggestions?
I tried a bit of watercolor paint but it shrivels the popcorn a bit- thinking about maybe sugar crystal sprinkles or food coloring? any suggestions?

Hmmm…we just used regular popcorn, too. Dropped it right inside the ornament (w/o the metal top, obviously). Then put the ornament inside a brown paper bag. Rolled the top down. Microwaved about a minute at a time…and it took 2.5 minutes.
Anyone else have advice?

Anyone else have them break? I had a nickel sized piece burst out into the paper bag. I really want to do this for my kinders, but not if they are going to do that! Help!

Bummer. How long did you microwave them? Was the bag folded down?
By ohamanda on 12.19.11 1:56 pm | Permalink
I think it was at the 1 minute interval when I checked it and found the piece broken out. Sounds like its just a fluke?? I’ll try again..I just love this idea…still trying to come up with a fun Pop saying to go with it! Thanks for sharing!
