Daniel & the Lions’ Den {Super Sunny Day}

We had our last Super Sunny Day at church! I have to admit, I was kinda bummed! I loved all the fun decorations and the little excitement it brought! But there was still fun to be had at home!

The Bible story was Daniel and the Lions Den with the main focus on God being with us wherever we go. This is a good one for my Lydia who tends to treat meeting strangers with the same attitude as being thrown to the lions! So, we took our Chalk It Up Card and followed the directions—make a lion pawprint path down the driveway!

I drew one really great lion print. But after that one I realized it would take me about 45 minutes to draw a path down the driveway. So, I simplified it a bit and the kids joined in with their own version of lion paws.

While we walked down the path…

and ran up the path…

we talked about what it must have been like for Daniel when he was going to the lion’s den. Was he scared? Was he trusting God? Was God with him? Then we talked about the scary things we’ve had to do. How did we react? Was God with us?

It was a quick activity and the kids loved it. And I love how it’s a GIANT reminder of our story and of God’s care for us! All these Super Sunny Day activities from church have been crazy simple. But it’s got me in a good habit of making an activity to meetup with each Sunday’s lesson. I want to partner with my church and this is a simple way to do it!

What did your kids learn at church this week? How can you make an activity from it?

Sidewalk Chalk Family Portraits {Super Sunny Day}

Our Super Sunny Day continues with more sidewalk chalk adventures! This week’s lesson at church was Paul and Silas. Know the story? Paul and Silas were put in prison for preaching about Jesus. While in jail they began to praise God and sing songs of worship. And that’s when God sent an earthquake to knock down the jail! Paul and Silas stayed inside the prison while the guard is about to kill himself because he thinks he’s lost all his prisoners! Paul and Silas call out to the guard who is shocked they haven’t escaped! Their actions lead the guard to become a follower of Jesus!

There is so much good teaching from this story (standing up for what you believe, worshiping during hard times, etc.). But the point they communicated was that God loved the jailer just as much as he did Paul and Silas. God loves regardless of position, family or even actions!

So, the instructions from our Chalk It Up card was to make a Chalk Family Portrait! We traced our bodies on the sidewalk and decorated them. Then talked about the differences and similarities between us. And of course, how God loves us no matter what we look like or do!

The kids loved this. Here’s Lydia’s self-portrait. She colored her outfit exactly the same as she had on that day. And her hair is just adorable!

I think Asa’s little guy turned out cute, too. I even tried to make a Braves shirt for him. Guess I should stick to blogging instead of clothes design.

Of course, the kids traced me. And I don’t think they did a very good job. I mean, I know I’ve birthed two children, but do my hips really look like that?!

But do you like my shirt? It’s for Impress Your Kids! Wanna buy one?

The activity itself isn’t very creative. It’s the conversation around the activity that is important. And that’s what Impress Your Kids is all about–inspiring and reminding you to impress your kids with God’s Word in every activity and every conversation. So, use sidewalk chalk or talk during dishwashing. But whatever you do, point your kids to God, His love and His Word!

Sidwalk Chalk PAINT {Super Sunny Day}

It’s been too long since I’ve posted! I told you about my brother’s house burning down and want to thank you for the fabulous comments. I passed them on to my sister-in-law and I know she appreciated them. This past week, my brother, sister-in-law and 7 year old niece have been living with us.

We’ve had a fun time staying up late, playing all day and eating dinner together. And I’ve been keeping my niece during the day while her parents work. Being a sudden mom of 3? Trying to think of activities to do for a 7 year old when you’re used to a 2 year old? It’s been tougher than I thought!

I had hoped we’d do all kinds of things to blog about. But mostly, we went bowling, saw a puppet show at the library (all though, I did blog about that on my personal blog!) and generally located all the free or nearly free stuff for kids to do around town! One afternoon, however, we made SIDEWALK CHALK PAINT!

I had seen this on Pinterest several times and knew I wanted to make it. But when I finally read the instructions, I almost laughed! There’s nothing to it! In fact, after leaving our sidewalk chalk out in the rain several times and noticing how bright it writes when water-logged, I should have known how to do it. Are you ready for this?

First, put a piece of sidewalk chalk into a plastic bag. Then let your kids whack it into a (semi-) fine powder with a hammer. This may have been the most exciting part of the day. This is my niece, Nora showing us how it’s done!

Next, pour your sidewalk chalk powder into a bowl and add a little water. (We tried to do matching bowls, see the blue in the blue bowl? Pink in the pink bowl? The kids thought that was pretty smart!)

Once you stir it around, grab a paint brush and start painting! It is so much brighter and more vivid than regular chalk! And it seemed to last so much longer, too!

Even the plain colors like white and orange seemed to pop when added to water! The kids didn’t really paint any great creations. They were just more interested in making marks on the sidewalk, flicking their brushes to make splatter paint and then of course, painting themselves!

It was a fun activity for a Super Sunny Day!
