K is for Kindness

Asa’s letter this week is K. Which is completely random. I just make up a new letter based on whatever book we’re covering each week. This week is a Kangaroo book. So. it’s K.

Which leads perfectly to a word my rough-and-tumble boy needs to know: KINDNESS.

We read two kindness scriptures today:

Be kind and tender to one another. Ephesians 4:32 (NIrV)

So put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes. Colossians 3:12 (NIrV)

The second is one Lydia and I memorized eons ago. And I’ve never forgotten the cadence in which we memorized it: Put on kindness asifitwereyourclothes. Lydia still has her Kindness Poster up on her closet door.

I love the picture of putting on kindness like clothes. It’s the same feeling I get when I read about the armor of God. It’s such a big and real attitude–so real I should be feeling it and living in it at all times!

I decided to do a little K activity with Asa. And add some kindness-clothing stuff to it.

We pulled out our hand-dandy old magazines, cut out some letter K’s and then Mod Podged them.

Onto a hanger.

An old wooden baby hanger.

hanger upcycle

Yes. I know this seems like a craft for the girly. For the very crafty girly. But I couldn’t help it. I knew he’d like looking at and gluing all those K’s. And he’s had that little hanger since he was a baby! It was perfect for upcycling! (I’ve still haven’t got the hang of boy crafts!)

Don’t worry. We did add a scripture to it…

put on kindness as if it were your clothes

Today is drizzly in cool in Atlanta so I think this hanger will be perfect for housing Asa’s hoodie. And every time (ok, most times) we take that hoodie off our fancy hanger and put it on his little body, I hope we remember to put kindness on, too!

Scripture Alphabet: Letter K

alphabet craft scripture letter k

When I was little I had a tape (a tape!) of some jungle animals singing scripture songs. (Does anyone remember that? I don’t know what it’s called!) Anyway, one of the songs was Psalm 34:13 and it went like this, “Kkkkkeep thy tongue from evil! Psalm 34: thirteeeeen.” Well, I guess it doesn’t transfer well through the written word! The point is, I have always remembered this verse. So, when we got to letter K, this is the verse I picked!

Speaking evil is different at different ages. For a teenager or adult, it might be an actual curse word. It might be gossip. For a kid it might be whining or complaining about a sibling. This verse is a reminder to keep words of life on our lips–not negative, bad words. And I think, most of the time, when it comes to the way our kids talk–this is one of those things that is CAUGHT and not TAUGHT. As parents, we need to be careful about what we say and how we say it. It reminds me of another verse I learned as a child…and still say to myself today:

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
Psalm 19:14

‘K?

Are you guys OK if I don’t take pictures of all the worksheets and the construction paper verses that EJ and I do?  I keep forgetting to take pictures of them, and then when I do take pictures, I’m a couple weeks behind… yadda yadda yadda.  If you really want to see them, I’ve got a post in drafts just waiting to go… no? ‘K, then!

“The Lord bless you and keep you.” Numbers 6:24.  This has been one of my favorite verses for years, and I thought our “K” week would be a perfect time to introduce this to EJ.  We’ve been talking about how God will keep him safe through all his 2 year old fears, and I love that this verse is a reminder of that as well as a blessing.  As EJ grows, I pray that he will really see the depth of how the Lord will keep him.

Now, I’m excited about what I’m about to share – it’s not a craft that EJ was able to participate in with me, but the use of it has already provided hours of fun and pretending.  Presenting… King EJ!

Every King needs a crown, and this was so much fun to make.  Seeing EJ’s face when I gave him his crown – priceless!

After carefully inspecting his King’s crown, EJ switched into full on King mode.  Since I made a crown for Dieter, too, I had to wear it and be King Momma.  Which was fun, too.

Notice how King EJ is going shirtless these days.  Perfect for the cooler weather hitting us now.

There are a lot of different ideas for making crowns floating around online these days, and of course, nothing beats construction paper crowns.  I’m in love with sewing felt right now, so when I got this bug in my brain, I had to make it.  I’m thinking about posting details on how I made these little gems on my craft blog, so I’ll let you know when I get my act together and post it over there.
