Bible ABCs: The Letter “C”

alphabet craft scripture letter c

You can learn a lot from me. Not because I am so amazing and creative. Nope. Because I learn (and mess up) as I go. And might as well learn from my mistakes instead of making your own.

Here’s our letter “C” verse from way back when. And apparently the hard-c, soft-c, c-h combination thing didn’t even cross my mind. I picked CAT and a verse that begins with CH. Which doesn’t help Lydia learn her letter sounds whatsoever.

But at least I drew a cute cat, right? Right?! And Lydia did do some nice matching of the black and pink pipe-cleaner whiskers. Just lovely!

I cannot for the life of me remember what else we did with this craft. I’m sure we checked out some “C” books and talked about cats. Or children. However, this verse is ingrained into Lydia’s head. This is one of those we say over and over again. Well, really, my husband and I don’t say it. We ask Lydia, “What’s our ‘C’ verse?” And she’ll say it back to us. Then God’s Word reminds her of what she should be doing and how she should be acting. So, even though it wasn’t a great phonics choice, it was a good choice for my little girl’s heart!

Anyway, if you’d like some cute (and phonetically accurate) alphabet crafts, you MUST download No Time For Flashcard’s Alphabet Crafts ebook. It’s only $8 and totally worth it. (Look at the cute “V” craft Lydia and I did from it!)

Crayons save the day!

I wasn’t able to wrap up last week the way I intended to…
Letter C

EJ was sick last Wednesday, so we weren’t able to take a trip to see baby chicks that just hatched at a friend’s house.  In fact, we weren’t able to do much at all.  But we hadn’t done anything with our letter C worksheets from First School, so EJ colored on those.  Look at his first “C” ever!

I had also been kicking around the idea of melting crayons into something else - I’ve seen letter shapes and circles on the web lately – but I don’t think EJ would have the patience for that yet.  I’ll save that for another year.

Thursday saw us heading down to Nag’s Head for a long weekend at the beach with some family and friends.  We talked with EJ about the beach last week during B-week, and of course, he was super-excited to get there.  He had a great time with his cousins…

But we never actually made it to the actual beach.  Due to the storm that was off the coast, the surf was so high, and for some reason, the water level (is that what it’s called at the beach?) was really high, too.  When we took EJ to the beach the first time, there was no way to even make it down the stairs to walk on the beach – the tide had brought the water straight to the bottom of the stairs.  No beach to walk on, no sand for sand castles.  Thankfully, Jockey’s Ridge State Park was close by, so we did get some kite flying done.

Today, I’m catching up on housework after being gone (all that laundry!), and I need to plan for our week of D things!  So we’ll be back on our regular schedule starting tomorrow.  See you then!

Soft C

I think C can be a hard letter for a child to understand at times – it makes so many sounds.  I’ve introduced 3 sounds of C to EJ… hard C as in cat, soft C as in centipede, and CH as in chocolate.  I just couldn’t isolate them and only do the hard C at this time – who could do the letter C for a week and not mention chocolate?  It would have to be a stronger person than I am.

It’s a wonderful dreary-fall-is-thinking-about-coming kind of day here in Richmond, so we have hunkered down inside all day.  We broke out the paint and painted some circle art!

Circle art

I am sure many others have done this out there in the world wide internets, but this is one I didn’t look up online at all.  I’ve been collecting different sizes of bottle caps and jar lids for a while, and some different ideas have been kicking around in my head about how to use them.  This one was as basic as they come – dip different sized round lids (or other circle items) into different color paints, and let the kiddo go crazy.

We both had a good time with this one, and I love the finished artwork!  We did a couple different ones to give to family members who love refrigerator-art.

Since EJ has been reluctant to talk a lot about our weekly Bible verses, I’ve been thinking about some other things to do with them to help impress them into his heart.  This week’s verse, “Cast all your care upon him, for he cares about you. ” (1 Peter 5:7) has a much better cadence to it than the others I’ve picked, and that helps us some.  I also think I’m going to look through the different Seeds Family Worship CDsto see if there are any verses that they use for any songs that would fit well each week (ooo – I just found their website and they have memory aids and chord charts for each verse and song!!!).  EJ loves these CDs (I love them, too!), and they truly do plant the seeds of the Word into the hearts of children.  EJ started singing along with the CDs before he was 18 months old.  I hope that if I can make the verse of the week real to him in more than one way, it will help a lot.

Do any of you have any advice in this area?  I feel like I am prepared with crafts and letter activities, but when it comes to hiding the Word in EJ’s heart, I feel lost.
