God is… our Provider

Another one of God’s names, Jehovah-jireh, means “the God who provides.” Just as He provided yesterday, He will provide tomorrow.

Genesis 22:13-14

Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.  Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.”

Matthew 6:25-34

“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?

“And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?

“And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!

“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’  For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

What beautiful, reassuring words!

We made a little bell-bird ornament to illustrate how God provides for the birds of the air…

This is a rather advanced craft – much more suitable to older kids.  The boys just played with extra ribbon while I made this little bird (directions here - there is not a link to this craft specifically, but scroll down a bit and you will see the tutorial towards the middle of the webpage).  But I loved how it turned out.  You  could also do a flower craft to represent the lilies of the field (we’re just not big into flowers at our house).

The boys loved listening to the verses from Matthew – I think people of all ages find comfort in these promises from the Lord.  Thank you, Lord, for being our Provider!

The director at my preschool recently shared your site with all of her teachers. I was thrilled to tell them that I knew you, Leigh, and that you live here in Richmond. You could sell your attributes of God ornaments. Less creative folks like me would buy them!
