one, two, three,

four, five…

and SIX!

My Lydia is six years old today! We’ve already played her new game (Trouble …you have to get a SIX to get your game piece out of home!), tried on her new light up boots (they’re too little! *sniff*), ate pancakes with apple butter (her fave) and are hoping to get school knocked out in a couple of hours!

I thought I would mourn every year on my kids’ birthdays. I was afraid I’d miss their baby-ness from the previous years. But I actually love my kids’ birthdays because my heart grows with them. This past year has been a big one for Lydia since she started Kindergarten. I love seeing how she’s matured. It only makes me all the more excited for Six!

Last weekend I coerced asked my husband to take the kids to Home Depot’s Kids Workshop. On (most) Saturdays they have a free workshop for kids to create something out of wood and nails. Each kid gets a certificate, a pin and an orange apron to pin it on. My kids have made trivets, spice racks, ornaments and even a Gingerbread House! (We used all that stuff as grandparent gifts last Christmas!)

Anyway, last weekend their project was a mini whiteboard presumably for a locker. Well, my kids have been keeping them on the kitchen table. And after a little idea I discovered on Pinterest, I started writing notes to the kids on them every morning before they come downstairs.

Some days it’s something silly like, “Asa is a little monkey” and I’ll draw a picture of a monkey. Or “Lydia makes me smile!” with a big smiley face.

The last few days I’ve been manipulating scriptures (in a good way!) that I could put their name in and draw a picture to. I drew a big Rapunzel-like tower for Lydia and wrote, “The Name of the Lord is a strong tower. Lydia runs into it and is safe!”. Here’s this morning’s notes:

The kids love to find their whiteboards and see what I’ve put on them. I feel like I’m putting a prayer, blessing and hug into their heart for the rest of the day!

{This is a free printable of cards for the whole alphabet. These would be great to stick in a lunchbox everyday. It would be a fun writing prompt (B is for Beautiful Smile or H is for Helping Me Do The Dishes Every Day) for you to bless your child and it seems kinda appropriate for a school lunch, dontcha’ think?}
