Sidewalk Chalk Family Portraits {Super Sunny Day}

chalk portrait

Our Super Sunny Day continues with more sidewalk chalk adventures! This week’s lesson at church was Paul and Silas. Know the story? Paul and Silas were put in prison for preaching about Jesus. While in jail they began to praise God and sing songs of worship. And that’s when God sent an earthquake to knock down the jail! Paul and Silas stayed inside the prison while the guard is about to kill himself because he thinks he’s lost all his prisoners! Paul and Silas call out to the guard who is shocked they haven’t escaped! Their actions lead the guard to become a follower of Jesus!

There is so much good teaching from this story (standing up for what you believe, worshiping during hard times, etc.). But the point they communicated was that God loved the jailer just as much as he did Paul and Silas. God loves regardless of position, family or even actions!

So, the instructions from our Chalk It Up card was to make a Chalk Family Portrait! We traced our bodies on the sidewalk and decorated them. Then talked about the differences and similarities between us. And of course, how God loves us no matter what we look like or do!

The kids loved this. Here’s Lydia’s self-portrait. She colored her outfit exactly the same as she had on that day. And her hair is just adorable!

I think Asa’s little guy turned out cute, too. I even tried to make a Braves shirt for him. Guess I should stick to blogging instead of clothes design.

Of course, the kids traced me. And I don’t think they did a very good job. I mean, I know I’ve birthed two children, but do my hips really look like that?!

But do you like my shirt? It’s for Impress Your Kids! Wanna buy one?

The activity itself isn’t very creative. It’s the conversation around the activity that is important. And that’s what Impress Your Kids is all about–inspiring and reminding you to impress your kids with God’s Word in every activity and every conversation. So, use sidewalk chalk or talk during dishwashing. But whatever you do, point your kids to God, His love and His Word!

Baby Moses: Super Sunny Day

baby moses basket

This week the Super Sunny Day Bible story at church was about baby Moses. This is one of my favorite stories because of the characters—I love imagining what it must have been like for a little baby inside a tar-covered basket. I love thinking about the big sister, Miriam obeying her mom and following baby Moses into the water. And of course, I can identify with Moses’ mother and the sacrifice she made for her son.

The instructions from our “Chalk It Up” card were to draw a river with blue chalk down our driveway. Then talk about the story of baby Moses. The kids really got into the river. It went ALL the way down our driveway. And we added fish.

After our river was ready, we got a basket, a baby and a blanket and acted out the whole thing! Here’s Lydia and Asa being Miriam and hiding in the bushes looking at baby Moses in the Nile River.

Of course, Lydia loved being the Princess.

Asa just liked moving baby Moses around the river. He was very protective of the little guy. They played it so seriously and (Lydia especially) made sure all the parts were played correctly!

I don’t know why we don’t act out Bible stories more. The kids love to play and act. Remember our Joseph role-playing at Christmas? Even now whenever you even get a towel near them, they throw it on their heads and pretend to be Joseph. I need to make more of an effort to facilitate acting out of Bible stories. It helps cement the story in their minds.

Our Nile River is still on the driveway so every time we pull in the kids say we’re swimming in the river! It’s been a really fun activity! Grab some chalk, act out a story and have a super sunny day!

Super Sunny Day

fun summer activities for kids

My church is great. I’ve been around lots of churches and it is so refreshing to find one that really and truly loves and focuses on kids. They do stuff just for fun to show kids and families they love them. This month, we’ve got a special theme for our preschool department: SUPER SUNNY DAY! We decorated the halls with beach balls, one of our awesome volunteers is giving out stickers while dressed as a giant sunshine, we have a theme song and t-shirts! It’s so fun!

And the best part is that last week all the kids went home with an ENTIRE BOX of sidewalk chalk! My kids could not wait to try it out (it’s not like we don’t have a giant box of it in the garage, this was just special!).

But the best part is that they included a CD with the theme song AND a “Chalk It Up Card”. This card has weekly chalk-activities to do with your kids that correlate to the lesson that was taught at church! Isn’t that cool?

hopskotch

“Neither height, nor depth, nor anything else can separate us from God’s love.” Romans 8:39

This week’s activity is to make a hopscotch board on the driveway and then say the verse with each jump. I just wrote it straight on the board so we said the words on the right jump. It was so fun! I took a video to share with you but…it didn’t turn out so well. Just know they were cute and (semi) getting the verse! We haven’t had any rain, so I’m sure we’ll try it again this week.

I love this idea of matching your activities at home with your lesson from church. Since my church is making it easy for me to do, I’m going to use this theme at home as much as I can! Over the next month, I’ll share the activities they suggest along with some other fun stuff that pops into my mind!

I even started a Pinterest board with some Super Sunny Day ideas–crafts that go with our Bible Story, summer activities and more sidewalk chalk stuff, too. (See? I told you I love Pinterest!) If you’re on Pinterest and you pin something you think would go with it, just write @oohamanda in the description so I can see it!

Have a Super Sunny Day!
